NEW: Loughlin Will Not Challenge Cicilline for Congress

Friday, April 04, 2014

Former Republican State Rep John Loughlin has announced that he will not be running for the District 1 Congress seat currently held by David Cicilline.

Friday, in a Facebook post, Loughlin made the following comments:

After a week of research, thought and reflection, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for office in 2014. Along with a group of friends and advisors I analyzed my potential entry into the first Congressional District race using three specific metrics. The first was support. In this category, I received a humbling and extensive outpouring of support from friends, family and former political supporters, encouraging me to run once again for Congress. For this, I am truly grateful and I thank each of you. The second metric was my ability to raise the funds needed for a competitive race. In 2010, I was outspent by a ratio of three to one. I was attacked over the airwaves repeatedly without the financial resources to respond effectively. I 2010, it took me nearly a year to raise 800K, there is simply not enough time left to raise the money needed to wage a successful campaign. Lastly I conducted analysis of how my message of growing our economy through fiscal conservatism would resonate in Rhode Island One. I believe this message would be well received, but without the resources to communicate that message effectively, I believe it would not result in appositive outcome. I again thank each of you for your messages of support and encouragement, they meant a great deal to me.
